FAQs

I have never done naginata or any martial art before. Can I still join?

Yes! Membership is open to anyone who supports the art of naginata. Our dojos also welcome beginners all year round!

What kind of equipment do I need to participate?

Newcomers or beginners can start out borrowing our equipment (naginata and specific parts of the armor/bogu). As individuals progress, they tend to purchase their own set of equipment. We facilitate this through our decades-long vendor relationships to ensure we get the best possible equipment and fit for you.

Do you teach Tendo-Ryu or other koryu naginata classes?

The Greater New York Naginata Federation is an atarashii naginata organization so we do not hold any koryu naginata events nor classes. However, some dojos may have separate Tendo-ryu or koryu classes so it is best to contact the Bitokukai organization directly to see which dojos have it.

What are the current health and safety policies for participating in class?

Policies may vary regionally, so please inquire ahead of showing up at a particular dojo. For classes at Ken-Zen in NYC, fully vaccinated individuals practice with masks on. We also encourage individuals to bring water bottles as well as wear comfortable clothing.
